A Start

We started Plastic Therapy for many reasons. It was a slow realization that although we cannot alter anyone else’s impact on the world, we can try to make a difference in our own lives and share that process with friends and family (and anyone else who wants to read our ramblings).

We aren’t “hippies”, “vegans” or “yogis” (no offense if you are) and we aren’t attempting to go zero waste (high five if you are). We’re just two friends who realized that we want to try to reduce our impact and that maybe a blog would be an easy way to share things with one another and our friends/family.

Lauren noticed that after storms there was a ton of trash on the beach. Mostly plastic water bottles, trash bags and other single use items. Like those stupid single use dental floss picks.

In traveling around the country by van (really not a hippie) Roxanne too noticed things. Like those dental floss picks, they make their way EVERYWHERE. At a remote site in the West Desert of Utah, in parking lots, at the beach, on the hiking trail to the Horseshoe Bend lookout in Arizona.

Around the same time we both started noticing how every restaurant gives you a straw. I don’t even like drinking out of straws. How everything in the grocery store is wrapped in plastic. How all of our daily use items - shampoo, sunscreen, lip balm - don’t come in reusable or even actually recyclable containers. How at lunch, mid mountain, at a ski resort our food was served in all disposable containers. Why? I’m not going to take anything to-go while skiing. So, it must be because it’s cheaper and easier for them. I get it, but what I can do to make a difference?

This blog won’t be posts about how to make your own soap or how you should buy metal straws and Ball mason jars for bulk foods. It will mostly be about the little steps we’re taking to change our habits and to talk about any products we find to help with those changes. What we liked or didn’t like about them. Where we found them, etc.
